After high school, Shannon wasn’t sure what she wanted to do.  She took a year off to think through her options and ended up finding her passion for hair.  With a stroke of luck, her best friend from hair school was working at Garbo’s and told her she should come check it out.  Lucky for us, Shannon loved it and has been here ever since!

It’s been a while since our last stylist spotlight and we couldn’t have chosen a better person to highlight as our first post back!  Read on below to learn more about Shannon Carsey!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

I have been a stylist at Garbos for 7 years. My best friend from hair school was a stylist at Garbo’s and wanted me to come join her.  At the time I wasn’t sure if I would fit in but I’m so glad I did because I work with a great group of people.!

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

Honestly I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school so I took a year off to decide. I had people that told me I’d make a great hair stylist because I enjoyed messing with hair and have always been a people person. So that’s what made me pursue a career as a stylist.

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I really enjoy cutting short pixie haircuts but ultimately I love every aspect of my job because it gives me the opportunity to make people feel good about themselves.

Due to COVID-19 Garbo's had to close its doors for a while - how did that impact you and what was it like coming back?

Covid really made me miss my work and it also made me realize how much I value my clients. I was ecstatic to come back and start doing hair again!

With all the new safety measures in place, has it been more difficult to do your job?

The new safety measures in place haven’t made it more difficult but it has been an adjustment in getting used to this new normal within our country. I know the changes we’ve made are good in helping keep everyone safe. {Garbo’s Salon and Spa Safety Guidelines}

Aside from those new safety measures, what is the biggest challenge you encounter as a stylist and how do you over come it?

The biggest challenge has been getting used to wearing a mask all day. Although its frustrating at times, I know it’s the right thing to do in keeping our clients safe.

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

Listening to people and being able to hold a conversation… being kind, attentive, and consistent in the service you provide.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you or your work?

I truly love what I do and care about the people who walk through our doors.  Our clients matter and I want them walking out feeling the best possible way about themselves.

Erica Bang

This month we shine the stylist spotlight on Omaha Stylist Erica Bang!  Erica has been a stylist for the past six and a half years and every single one of those years has been spent at Garbo’s!

Having grown up visiting Garbo’s to get her hair done, she knew the salon and the stylists who worked there.  When she realized she wanted to become a stylist as well she couldn’t think of a better place to start than Garbo’s.

We love when people find their home in our salon and can’t wait to share her amazing work with you here!  Read below to learn why Erica loves being a stylist and what new services she is offering to help grow her business.  Also, make sure to check out all the amazing before and after photos as well!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work here?

I have been a stylist for about 6 and a half years. I have loved every minute of it here at Garbo's. I wanted Garbos to be my first salon because when I was young I used to get my hair done by another stylist here, Crystal, and hair day with her was the best day ever !! I loved being here at the salon and it just felt like a great home for me.

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

My favorite service to provide clients is probably color. You can change someone's whole entire look by changing the color. Brightening around their face to deep dark colors can seriously make someone look at themselves totally different and give them confidence they didn't have before.

Why do you love being a hairstylist?

I love being a stylist for many reasons... Getting to know people is a huge part. I love doing hair (obviously), but getting to know someone for this many years and creating deep friendships is huge. I never realized how important some of my clients really are to me... I know so much about them and having a relationship with people outside of hair is something I truly love. I love being a stylist and helping people finally get the look they have always wanted.

You recently started providing extensions to your clients - what type of extensions do you offer and what was the training like to learn to properly install them?

The type of extensions I offer are called hand tied weft extensions. They are so fabulous !! They are the safest and softest type of extension on your hair. The training was a blast - about a 5 hour class of training and focus and learning to be the best on something so amazing was so fun.

Why do you think extensions are so popular these days?

I think extensions are so popular these days because it's so easy to get that thick hair people really want! If you can get thick, beautiful hair, why wouldn't you?! With a little bit of maintenance every 8 weeks, the hair can last up to a year or longer!! Feeling that good about yourself is worth it all for me. Coming from a fine haired girl, I WILL have the look I've always wanted !!

Leslie Johnson

This month we shine the stylist spotlight on Leslie Johnson!  Leslie has worked in the industry for almost thirty years and we have been thankful to have her behind a Garbo’s chair for the past eight.  Leslie calls the Village Pointe location home so we caught up with her there to learn more about how she continues to push herself to grow on a daily basis.  Read on to learn more about Leslie in her own words!

What is Your Favorite Service to Perform?

My favorite service to perform has become the two things I struggled with for many years: Precision haircuts and on point foil placement for amazing blondes.

What inspires your creativity?

Social media, the young hairdressers new in the industry, and customer service (as I've gotten older and am now realizing the true value of service).

What do you find most rewarding about your career as a hair stylist?

The smile on my client's faces when his/her hair does exactly as he/she wanted. I have been told, "This is the best haircut I've ever had" in the past and that absolutley makes my day.

What role does social media play in your business?

Social media has become crucial in our industry. Everyone follows hashtags and the more you publish your work, the wider it is seen. To me, social media has become the the fastest, most economical, and modern way to advertise.

What is something new or exciting that you have recently done/worked on?

Lately, I have been studying the latest in hair extensions called "Handtied Natural Beaded Row" extensions. I recently became certified using the Manna Hair system. This new way of installing extensions is so amazing! It is completely customizable, very little to no stress on natural hair, and minimal maintenance.

is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Even though I have been in the industry for almost three decades, I am learning and improving every day and with every client. I am not done growing. I am not done learning. Time has let me discover there is always more to know. Some days I feel like I am on day one out of school taking in knowledge. I personally think that's a great place to be. Each year I have a new personal goal with my business. As a single mother, I want my children to learn to never stop learning, to never give up, and to always keep your mind open to new ideas, ways, and thoughts. Openness brings growth!

Thank you so much to Leslie for allowing us to interview her this month.  As Leslie mentioned, social media has become a crucial selling tool in our industry.  It helps showcase a stylist’s work, build credibility and find new clients.

If you are looking for a new stylist, why not check out Leslie’s work on her Instagram account!  I am positive you will be blown away:). If you are ready to make your appointment feel free to call Garbo’s, Village Pointe at (402) 991-2227 or book an appointment with Leslie online!

Thanks as always for reading – we’ll be back next week with a special Valentine’s Day post from our owner, Darcy Michalek!
