It’s that wonderful time of year again when I love to reflect on the blessings of the year.

Many times I do my supply deliveries early on Sunday mornings when the salons are closed and the malls are quiet.  I was walking through them this past Sunday and as I looked around I could see the care that had been put into preparing for another busy day.  Stations clean, capes ready, foils torn…  It’s so much fun to stand in that quiet and then envision the energy that will fill these spaces.  Our amazing managers and reception staff are there early making coffee, preparing tickets and warming towels.  Our kind and talented stylists and estheticians show up shortly thereafter ready to create the magic that is transformation and relaxation at Garbo’s.

My goal for our company is to provide a place of welcome respite from a busy hectic day.  A place where any member of the family feels comfortable and is able to enjoy a little luxury.  If I could share all of the wonderful and kind things our staff has done for each other and for their clients and if I could share with you all of the kind and amazing things our clients have done for our staff, I could write a book.  There are so many good people out there!

Business is never easy, no matter what industry or profession.  We work to make a living but we also work to make a difference.  Over the past year we were blessed to be able to share our success with those throughout our community.  One of the causes most dear to our hearts is the Boys Town National Hotline.  We believe in what they are doing for the community and love giving back to help them do it.

Every day we work to make each person we touch feel just a little better.  We try to educate and guide and make life a little easier and more fun.  From the outside it might just look like a salon and spa but what I am most thankful for is what’s on the inside.  Good, kind people taking good care of each other and their clients.  Happy Thanksgiving from my grateful heart to all of you.

Sending love,
Darcy Michalek

I’m Grateful

If you hang around me long enough, sooner or later you will hear me say “it’s impossible to be miserable and grateful at the same time”.   Life is tough, business is tough and some days it’s easier to focus on all of the tough stuff rather than the really good stuff.  Good stuff is long lasting, it sustains you through the difficult times, but it doesn’t do a very good job of that if you don’t take the time to remember what exactly you are grateful for.

I would encourage you to just take a minute, especially when you are stressed out or overwhelmed or depressed or full of anxiety, just take a deep breath and think of all of your blessings.   The right now blessings.   I read somewhere recently that those who live constantly in the past are continuously depressed about things they cannot change and those who live only in the future are full of anxiety worrying about what might be.  Those poor souls then wake up one day and realize they missed their life because they didn’t focus on today and all of the gifts it has to give.  (My kids accuse me of having a bit of “Fear of missing out” because I love to stay up late and get up early and wring every bit of goodness out of each and every day.) You know, as I think about it, it’s also really difficult to stay in the state of “woe is me” when you are helping someone else feel better about their day or their life or anything for that matter.  So the one-two punch for combatting misery is 1) recalling who and what you are grateful for and 2) doing something kind for someone else.  Kindness matters.  Not much else does if kindness isn’t present in the intent.  So really, every day could be a day of thanksgiving if you think about it that way!

Throughout the years I have been blessed to know some of the most generous people.   People who helped me through something when they didn’t need to and who simply overwhelmed me with their kindness and extreme generosity.  Today I think about them and am thankful for those people.  Now I try to be that person to someone else because if we aren’t here to take good care of each other and help each other what’s the point?

I see this in the wonderful talented people I get to work with every day.  These are people who love what they do and are absolutely and totally passionate about helping people.  Helping people feel better and look better, helping them escape for a little “me time” when a couple of hours in a few weeks might be all they have to spare on themselves.  The team I am blessed to work with is comprised of kind, generous people who love, and I mean LOVE, taking good care of others.   Don’t get me wrong, they struggle too, with life, with love, with heartache and illness and even death of a loved one but this team of people still show up every day on a mission to bring joy and kindness to others.

So many days I am running from salon to salon and I am greeted by friendly, wonderful, beautiful smiles at our reception desks and laughter and relaxation in our salons and spas and it just makes me smile.   I smile knowing that for just a short period of the day these dear, wonderful people I call my teammates are sharing great joy with so many and that is just awesome, and so are they.

I can’t end my time with you without thanking you.  Thanking you for trusting us to take good care of you.  Thanking you for telling us when we can do better.  Thanking you for the laughter, the uplifting words and your loyalty.  May God bless each and every one of our Garbo’s team members and you, our fabulous clients, on this Thanksgiving Day and every day.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
