From spilling a fresh bottle of liquid foundation to getting a red lipstick on your white shirt, we’ve all had our own misfortunate experiences with makeup stains…  We run to our bathroom cabinets and do our best to remove them with whatever we can find – rubbing alcohol, kitchen vinegar, even hairspray!  But sometimes, those go-to methods of removing makeup stains aren’t enough.

Often times, there are pesky makeup stains that are harder to remove.  In such a case, it is suggested to take it to a dry cleaner.  Some dry cleaners even offer free pickup and delivery right to your door!  On the other hand, if you have the right products, you can remove makeup stains at home.  Below are a few quick solutions to help with your fight against spilled makeup!

#1 Makeup Wipes

You use them to clean makeup off your face, why not use them to clean up after a spill?!  Makeup wipes have great cleaning potential – they can remove stains out of cotton fabric, silk cloth, leather and even white shirts!  They are even safe to use on carpets, curtains and couches.  Makeup wipes are super quick and easy to use and this sneaky technique works like magic!

#2 Shaving Cream

Surprise!  Shaving cream can actually lift makeup stains!  Let me introduce you to this amazing trick.  Shaving cream is best-suited to remove liquid or cream stains such as foundation, concealer, or BB creams.  Any good shaving cream works wonders and will cut right through the oily component of a makeup product and gradually lift the pigment.  If the stain is a stubborn one, it is recommended to mix a small amount of shaving cream with a small amount of alcohol.  Apply the mixture to the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.  Afterward, carefully rub the stain and wipe off the cleaning mixture.

#3 Ice

This is one of my favorites – no need to run to the store as the ice in your freezer might just do the trick! Grab an ice cube and apply it to the spilled makeup stain to remove it from your clothes.  Rub the ice cubes vigorously on the fabric.  In no time at all, the melted ice and cold water will remove the makeup stain.  Avoid hot water when trying to remove stains as it can potentially spread the stain instead of lifting it.  Save the hot water for your next relaxing bath!

#4 Detergent Pen

Have you ever heard of a detergent pen?  These pens are specifically designed to treat minor stains that need a quick fix – just like spilled makeup!  Just like makeup wipes, the detergent pens also contain moisture for erasing stains. These magic pens are convenient and harmless on most fabrics – even those labeled “dry clean only”!

$5 Oil-Free Makeup Remover

If you don’t have makeup wipes laying around try reaching for an oil-free makeup remover instead.  The ‘oil-free’ ingredient is a must; otherwise you’ll most likely end up creating a bigger mess than you had before.  Thus, it is recommended to consider a high-end or branded makeup remover.

Eileen Staley grew up in a small town and thought she would end up in an equally small salon when she grew up.  However, life had other plans!  For the past five years Eileen has called our Regency location home!

As we close out the month of February we wanted to shine our stylist spotlight on someone who goes above and beyond.  Not only is Eileen a top performing stylist (named a 2019 Top Performer) she is also one of our talented business coaches.  The enthusiasm she has for her work is contagious and we are so excited to shine this month’s stylist spotlight on her!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

Being from a small town, I always thought I’d end up in a small, family run salon but the minute I met Darcy Michalek (Owner of Garbo’s Salon and Spa), I knew Garbo’s was for me. Family is such a big deal at Garbo’s and I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve been lucky to be with Garbo’s for five years and I have no plans of ever leaving!

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

When I think back to my childhood I was always doing my doll’s, sister’s, and even friend’s hair before 4th grade basketball games!  I knew from the time I was a child that I loved hair and that I would make that my job when I grew up.

I’ve come a long way since playing with my doll’s hair – I used to think hair had to be wet to get a curl with a curling iron!  Every year in this business makes me love my job even more.  There really is no better feeling than seeing my clients smile and check themselves out after I do their hair.  Knowing I’ve made a positive impact in how they see themselves means the world to me!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

If I could do hair color all day long, I would be one happy girl! It always keeps me on my toes and makes me think!

We understand you are an educator for the salon - what do you teach and why did you want to start teaching?

I get the privilege of teaching both Wella hair color theory and business coaching.  I was approached and asked to teach both subjects and I couldn’t say no.  There was a need to help out new stylists who wanted a better understanding of the Wella color line and there were also a large number of stylists who needed direction on how to grow to be a successful stylist behind the chair.

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as a hairstylist and how do you overcome it?

The job is pretty glamorous and there really isn’t much to complain about but nothing hurts me more than having an upset client. Sometimes color doesn’t go as planned or we aren’t on the same page but luckily, you can fix any color or style and make it right!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

The list goes on and on!  To me, being genuine and really focusing on what your client needs is so important. Clients need our help and it is such a blessing to have the opportunity to be there for them!

Hayli Winans’ career began at Garbo’s just about three years ago (she’ll celebrate her anniversary in March!).  Her friend told her about the salon and mentioned that she should look into it if she was interested.  After a great interview with our owner, Hayli got to work behind her new chair!

It’s always fun to learn what brought people to Garbo’s and to watch them grow behind the chair.  Hayli is this month’s stylist spotlight because she is working extremely hard to build her business.  Anyone who puts in the extra work to bring in new clients deserves to be recognized!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

I have been a stylist at Garbos for 3 years in March!  I had a friend who worked here and loved it. After meeting with Darcy [the owner of Garbo’s Salon and Spa] I knew Garbo’s is where I wanted to be to grow my career!

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

I have wanted  to be a hairstylist since middle school, I’ve just always been amazed by the difference somebody’s hair can make in their life.  Being able to make someone feel so good about themselves to the point where they are ecstatic about how they look is the most awesome feeling!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I love updos and downstyles, loose boho styles are my favorite, I love the energy and excitement that comes with weddings and other special occasions where I get to help someone feel beautiful!  I also love highlights and balayage – pretty, dimensional hair is the best but if you don’t love the harsh grow out of highlighting, balayage can still give tons of dimension without the high maintenance upkeep.  I also love men’s cuts!  They are super detailed and the look of a smooth fade is one of the most satisfying things for me to do! Lashes are right up there too! I really couldn’t pick a favorite!

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as a hairstylist and how do you overcome it?

Being a hairstylist is too commonly thought of as not a “real job”.  That it’s just a fun job that allows you to play with hair all day.  However, in reality, it is more physically and emotionally demanding than many other careers but the bonds you build with your clients who truly appreciate you make it all worth it!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

Dedication to the industry. You really have to want to be a hairstylist to be a successful one. As fun as it is, it takes a lot of work  to build a clientele and it’s easy to get discouraged during slow times of the year. Therefore, if you’re not 100% dedicated you won’t be successful in the industry.
