It’s almost Summer! Is your hair ready? When it comes to this season of the year, we recommend low maintenance hair styles for the summer that don’t require a lot of styling. The sun can cause our hair to become dry and brittle leaving us with a not-so-great look and split ends. Simple things like regular trims, easy styles, and the right products will ensure your hair looks and feels fresh all summer long. Keep reading for our top tips and tricks!

Popular Summer Styles

1. Bobs

Short hair screams low maintenance, and that’s what we want for the summer! A bob is a fun and fresh way to change up your hairstyle for the summer. It’s fast and easy to style, and short locks will keep you feeling cool!

2. Mid-Length Cut

A mid-length cut gives you several style options while still being low-maintenance. Think beachy mermaid waves… It’s the perfect length for quick and effortless styles all summer long!

3. All About Bangs

Bangs are an easy way to create style with no heat. Bangs help create a styled and layered look perfect for the summer. There are a few options when it comes to picking a bangs style. Our stylists can help you pick one that will perfectly frame your face for summer!

4. Bring on the Color

Creative colors and patterns are a hot trend for summer. If you’re looking to make a statement and have a little fun this summer, try a new color or colors in your hair. Our experienced stylists will help you pick a color that will complement your skin tone and add fun to your style.

Products for Summer

Sun, sweat, humidity, and chlorine all damage your hair during the Summer months. But you don’t have to let these elements ruin your Summer fun! We have a few products that will help protect your hair during the summer and keep it looking shiny and healthy.

Garbo’s is offering 25% off all Aveda products May 13-21, so stock up for summer! We’ve linked a few below for you to check out!

1. Use a High Quality Conditioner

Avoid washing your hair everyday. Shampooing dries hair out and removes the natural oils from your scalp. To help keep your hair moisturized and prevent dryness and damage use a high quality conditioner. Garbo’s has some great options including this one from Aquage.

2. Add Oil to Your Hair if Using Heat

Heat dries out your hair and causes frizz. If you’re using a blow dryer or curling iron to style your hair, apply an oil to help reduce split ends and strengthen your roots. This product and this product are two great options you can buy in store or online.

3. Hair Mask

Incorporating a hair mask into your routine is a great way to help keep your hair healthy during the summer. A hair mask will help keep your hair looking shiny, soft and less frizzy. A mask is also great for your scalp and for strengthening your hair. This one from our own line and this one from Moroccon Oil are two great options

4. Color-Treated hair products

Color-treated hair and summer elements do not mix well! If you have color treated hair, protect it from direct sun when possible. Use products specifically created for color treated hair to protect your hair and its color. This color safe shampoo and conditioner from Pulp Riot are two great choices.

Schedule your hair appointment today and stock up on summer products to keep your hair looking its best all summer long!

What are sulfates?  If you’re like me, you probably have heard the term “sulfate free” before.  But after I was done washing my hair last night it dawned on me… do I even know what that means?  Nope.  I don’t.  Therefore, I went researching to see if I could get a better understanding of why so many brands are removing sulfates and what it means for our hair.  Read on to learn more!

What is a sulfate?

Sulfates are a combination of molecules that attract water and oil – they are also the reason for the foaming lather we have come to expect from a shampoo.  Basically, because they attract water and oil they can pull the dirt and oil from our skin and hair allowing us to rinse it off and wash it down the drain.

Are they bad for me?

Not necessarily…   There is no evidence that these molecules can cause cancer or any type of health problem.  However, because sulfates are so good at removing the oil and dirt from your hair and body they can sometimes remove too much.  Sulfates are aggressive cleaners.  They can strip the hair of the natural oils and proteins that are needed to keep it looking and feeling healthy.  The stripping of proteins can also lead to your color fading, any smoothing treatments you’ve had done to become less effective and overall dry out and break the hair shaft.

Why do Salons Recommend Sulfate Free Products?

If there are no health risks then why do our stylists always seem to recommend products that are “sulfate free”.  Well, if you just received a color treatment, if your hair is prone to dryness or if your ends are pretty damaged then using a product with sulfates in it could lead to more damage.  Your stylist wants you to be happy with your hair long after you leave the salon.  By recommending a product without sulfates they can be sure your hair will stay healthy until the next time they see you.

Recommendations

If you have been slow to get on the “sulfate free” train, its okay!  If your hair loves what its getting right now then stick with it.  However, if you find your strands to be a bit more damaged or dryer than you would like them to be, consider switching over to a product that doesn’t use sulfates.
Garbo’s own haircare line was designed around the idea of leaving the hair softer, smoother and healthier than before it was applied.  Thats why you won’t find sulfates in Garbo’s own line.  Here are a few products from the Garbo’s line that we recommend – all of them can be purchased online through our shop!
Garbo's Argan Anti-Frizz Shampoo – 10 oz
Garbo's Anti-Frizz Shampoo
Garbo's True Hue Anti-Fading Shampoo – 10 oz

Garbo's Keratin Therapy Shampoo – 8 oz

Garbo's Anti-Frizz Conditioner
Garbo's Colormoist Conditioner – 10 oz

Hopefully the whole “Sulfate Free” thing makes a bit more sense now.  Still have questions?  Please leave them in the comments box below!

I love how a new season can bring with it the opportunity to start anew – to change things up a bit.  However, knowing what it is in style or on trend can be daunting – especially if you aren’t ready to make a drastic change.  Thankfully, this fall’s hair and beauty trends fall in a pretty broad range so we have plenty of room to freshen things up on our own terms.  I’ve rounded up my favorite styles, cuts and looks for the new season in hopes of giving you some inspiration, and maybe a little confidence to try something new!

90’s Inspired Hair Accessories

Get ready for a comeback!  As with so many things this season – what was old is new again.  Remember those Banana Clips and thick headbands you used to wear back when?  Well go pull them out from the dusty drawer you threw them in because they are back!

Don’t be afraid to mix it up with these accessories – trade out your muted headband for a large neon one (also very in this fall) and wear it over your ears.  Instead of wearing one barrette pair it with a few more and stack them on top of each other.  Or, try stuffing all your hair into a large banana clip and wearing it higher on your head!  Need more inspo?  Check this site out for a few more ideas.

Hair Styles:

Low ponytails are super in style this season.  Get that baby as low as it will go while keeping the sides sleek and straight.  Pair this style with a bold middle part to shake things up a bit.

The hair scarf – my favorite trend this season!  There is no easier way to class up a simple look than tying a beautiful hair scarf around your ponytail or bun.  We are seeing both long and short scarves so don’t be afraid to mix things up and have some fun with this style!  Here are a few options I found online from Anthropologie (I have these and LOVE them), Amazon and J.Crew.

Girl With Scarf in Hair

Effortless big waves are always in style and they are still going strong this season.  Make sure you are using a heat protectant spray (Garbo’s has two great options: one that can speed up blow drying time and another that has a bit more hold to it).  If you want to avoid the heat altogether, try braiding damp hair and letting your strands dry to achieve a similar look.  Try Garbo’s Volume Infusion to really nail the natural look – this leave in spray will add a little bit of volume and definition while making the hair super soft and shiny.

Haircuts:

While there are many cuts that are in this season, two of my faves are:

The Wash and Go cut – the cut that allows your hair to be itself.  Let the hair dry naturally to take full advantage of this low maintenance ‘do.

The Bob – Another wash and go style that is cut just below the chin.  This style doesn’t have too many layers so it is perfect for you low maintenance ladies out there.

If these aren’t enough for you, check out a few more options here.

Aveda Hair Medium Cut - Blonde

Hair Color

As always, going dark for the fall is still popular.  However, there are so many different color browns to choose from so here are the three that jump out at us this month:

Deep Chestnut Brown – The perfect fall color for your hair.  No matter the skin tone, this color will look amazing on you and with anything you wear this season.

Light Understated Brown – Not quite as dark but not close to blond either.  This color is much more understated and is perfect for you if you want a more natural look.

Rose Brown – With just a touch of violet and pink, this color strays away from the boring.  This different take on the classic brunette color will give you the change you are looking for this season.

Freshening up your style for a new season doesn’t have to mean a drastic change.   The range of this Fall’s hairstyles, cuts and colors is pretty broad so finding your next ‘do while still staying on trend is easier then ever.  However, if drastic change is what you’re after that is totally “in” as well!

Whatever you are ready to try this season you can count on Garbo’s to help.  Bring in your wild and crazy ideas and put our stylists to the test – we are confident you’ll walk away looking amazing and feeling your best!

Sending Love,

Maddie

This week was a special week for us – we had the opportunity to join Omaha Fashion Week in its first bridal themed showcase – The Wedding Salon!

As the summer winds down (I can’t believe Labor Day is almost here!) and wedding season comes to a close, we were excited to show those attending the event the different hair and makeup styles we were able to create.  As the night’s exclusive makeup and hair vendor, we had the chance to let our creative juices flow and come up with the styles that best suited both the model and the dress they would adorn later that evening.  From up-do’s to braids to large back-combed styles, we really had fun creating each and every look!

Just like a typical wedding day it was both exciting and stressful… doing hair and makeup for 70+ women is no easy task!  With only a few hours to make visions into reality, the floor was buzzing with activity.  As the final bobby pins were placed and the clouds of hairspray died down, the final products began to emerge… and let me tell you, everyone looked stunning!  It was hard to believe the women in the chairs were not getting ready to walk down the aisle but instead the runway!
