No doubt, last year was hard.  But even with that challenge, our stylists and estheticians continued to perform at their highest levels each day. Their dedication, hard work, and excellence shone through every aspect of their work.

Each year we enjoy recognizing and celebrating those who take their commitment to their stylists to the next level.  While we truly value and appreciate everyone who calls Garbo’s home, it is important to honor those who go above and beyond.  While we normally throw a large party and take lots of pictures, this year we had to celebrate differently.

With over 100 service providers working for Garbo’s Salon and Spa, these stylists and estheticians have excelled in their performance. These fantastic men and women worked hard all year – taking great care of each client, and constantly working to improve their skills.

The Top Performers of 2020 are out and we wanted to take the time to recognize each winner individually below. If you see your stylist/esthetician listed, please tell them congratulations. They have definitely earned it!

After high school, Shannon wasn’t sure what she wanted to do.  She took a year off to think through her options and ended up finding her passion for hair.  With a stroke of luck, her best friend from hair school was working at Garbo’s and told her she should come check it out.  Lucky for us, Shannon loved it and has been here ever since!

It’s been a while since our last stylist spotlight and we couldn’t have chosen a better person to highlight as our first post back!  Read on below to learn more about Shannon Carsey!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

I have been a stylist at Garbos for 7 years. My best friend from hair school was a stylist at Garbo’s and wanted me to come join her.  At the time I wasn’t sure if I would fit in but I’m so glad I did because I work with a great group of people.!

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

Honestly I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school so I took a year off to decide. I had people that told me I’d make a great hair stylist because I enjoyed messing with hair and have always been a people person. So that’s what made me pursue a career as a stylist.

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I really enjoy cutting short pixie haircuts but ultimately I love every aspect of my job because it gives me the opportunity to make people feel good about themselves.

Due to COVID-19 Garbo's had to close its doors for a while - how did that impact you and what was it like coming back?

Covid really made me miss my work and it also made me realize how much I value my clients. I was ecstatic to come back and start doing hair again!

With all the new safety measures in place, has it been more difficult to do your job?

The new safety measures in place haven’t made it more difficult but it has been an adjustment in getting used to this new normal within our country. I know the changes we’ve made are good in helping keep everyone safe. {Garbo’s Salon and Spa Safety Guidelines}

Aside from those new safety measures, what is the biggest challenge you encounter as a stylist and how do you over come it?

The biggest challenge has been getting used to wearing a mask all day. Although its frustrating at times, I know it’s the right thing to do in keeping our clients safe.

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

Listening to people and being able to hold a conversation… being kind, attentive, and consistent in the service you provide.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you or your work?

I truly love what I do and care about the people who walk through our doors.  Our clients matter and I want them walking out feeling the best possible way about themselves.

If you’re interested in booking an appointment with Shannon, you can find her at our Village Pointe Location.  You can schedule an appointment with her by calling 402-991-2227 or by booking her online.  Finally, make sure you’re following her @shannonkayhair.

Thanks as always for reading!

Sending love,

Maddie

As I write this from my home office, Garbo’s has been closed for twenty long days.  Thankfully, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting a Facebook live event for our team on Friday just to reconnect and share some thoughts.  Nothing formal, but it was good for me because I’m really bad at the digital stuff.

I wore my favorite Dallas Cowboys sweatshirt thinking it would help me channel my inner coach… it was wonderful but very emotional for me – I think I only cried twice which is actually pretty good lately!  While I prepared for what I was going to say, I thought of our talented staff who is working hard to take care of themselves and their families while navigating unemployment, homeschooling, and all of the other challenges we’re all facing.  They inspire me more than I can ever tell you.

So many of you, our wonderful clients, have reached out with positive encouragement and understanding.  You have stayed so patient with us as we wait to see when we will be allowed to reopen.  Thank you so much for that.  Until we are certain about the date we will reopen, we have decided to stop trying to reschedule appointments.  Once we know when we’ll be able to open back up we will bring our reception staff back to begin the rescheduling process which should take only a few days.

Please know that you waiting for your stylists, estheticians and nail techs while we are closed means the world to us.  This week we are launching our #ownyouroutgrowth campaign .  I myself will be sharing the gray hair and the un-manicured nails that will be waiting for my dear Garbo’s professionals.  We’ll have some fun with it and would love to encourage you to share your photos too.

If that’s not enough, to try and lighten this all up a bit, our team has challenged me to try a little styling of my own from home.  You’ll be able to watch my struggles on our social media channels and be able to try the challenge for yourself!

What I think is important to share here is that I have absolutely no talent when it comes to this and I really don’t like doing it either!  My favorite thing is leaving all things beauty to our pros because all I do is struggle.  No one looks forward to their weekly blowout more than I do!  Our team can tell you when they get stuck with me they get some DIRTY hair to work with.  They are so kind when they say “I think we’ll shampoo one more time”… We all know what that means – I waited WAY too long between washes!

Our online store remains open and we are working hard to get you all your orders as soon as we can.  I’ll let you in on a little secret,  I am the pick, pack, and ship department for our online store and all orders are prepared in my dining room.  Your patience regarding my turnaround time is so appreciated!  We can’t say thank you enough for your support and kindness through all of this.  There are so many good people out there making this hard time so much easier for everyone.

So, from my home to yours, I pray for your good health and God’s grace to see us quickly back to any kind of normal that has us taking good care of you in our salons and spas again.  Our team is so excited and so ready to get back to work so when we are allowed to reopen just know we can’t wait to see you!

God Bless,

Darcy

We all may be stuck inside and the doors to our salons locked up tight but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the hard work of someone who truly deserves it.  This month’s spotlight shines the light on one of our fabulous estheticians.  We’ve spent the last few weeks sharing all the amazing services our spa offers so it only makes sense to share more about the person who is in charge of them!

Katherine Bower joined Garbo’s seven years ago and calls our Village Pointe location “home”.  In addition to her work as an esthetician she is also our Spa Lead and Village Pointe‘s wedding coordinator!   She may be busy but she handles all of her responsibilities with ease.  It’s no wonder she is this month’s spotlight!

How long have you been an esthetician at Garbo’s Salon and what made you want to work there?

I’ve been working for Garbo’s going on 7 years. I had a friend who worked for the company recommend I apply and I’m so glad I did! I knew right away after my interview with Darcy that it was the best place to grow my career!

Facial in Omaha by Katherine Bower

Why did you choose to be an esthetician and why do you love it?

I chose to be an esthetician because I have always struggled with acne and skin problems. Going to aesthetic school gave me the opportunity to educate myself on how to take care of my own skin and my client’s skin!  I absolutely love what I do. I have the opportunity to make my clients feel good about themselves! And to me that is extremely rewarding.

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

My favorite service I provide to my clients is facials.  I get to help someone understand their skin and how to take care of it and they also leave feeling relaxed and pampered!  But I really do love all the services I provide my clients – from transforming brows to taking care of someone on their wedding day!
Omaha Spa Lead Katherine Bower

We understand you are the spa lead for the salon - what additional responsibilities do you have?

As the spa leader of Garbo’s, my responsibilities are making sure that the spa is the best it can be! I make  sure all the spa team members are educated and up to date on what’s new. I’m also the wedding coordinator for the Village Pointe location. I love being able to help brides plan their special day!

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as an esthetician and how do you overcome it?

I strive for perfection and sometimes it’s not going to happen over night. I do my best everyday to make sure my clients leave happy!
Omaha Facial by Katherine Bower

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful esthetician?

Being successful in this industry means you have to work hard and never stop educating yourself! Some days are easier than others but it all pays off in the end and I couldn’t be happier with where my career is now and where it is heading in the future!

As you know, this month is spa month - is there anything else you would like our readers to know about our spa or spa services we provide?

We offer so much in the spa at all the Garbo’s locations! Customized Image or Aveda facials, amazing massages to waxing and nails! We also have spa packages for the perfect day to relax and be pampered!
Thank you to Katherine for allowing us to interview her (over the phone) this month!  If you’re interesting in learning more about the salon services we offer, you can find them here.  If you’re interested in booking an appointment with Katherine Bower when we re-open our doors you can do that here!

As always, thank you for reading!  Stay healthy!

Eileen Staley grew up in a small town and thought she would end up in an equally small salon when she grew up.  However, life had other plans!  For the past five years Eileen has called our Regency location home!

As we close out the month of February we wanted to shine our stylist spotlight on someone who goes above and beyond.  Not only is Eileen a top performing stylist (named a 2019 Top Performer) she is also one of our talented business coaches.  The enthusiasm she has for her work is contagious and we are so excited to shine this month’s stylist spotlight on her!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

Being from a small town, I always thought I’d end up in a small, family run salon but the minute I met Darcy Michalek (Owner of Garbo’s Salon and Spa), I knew Garbo’s was for me. Family is such a big deal at Garbo’s and I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve been lucky to be with Garbo’s for five years and I have no plans of ever leaving!

Eileen Staley - Omaha Stylist Spotlight

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

When I think back to my childhood I was always doing my doll’s, sister’s, and even friend’s hair before 4th grade basketball games!  I knew from the time I was a child that I loved hair and that I would make that my job when I grew up.

I’ve come a long way since playing with my doll’s hair – I used to think hair had to be wet to get a curl with a curling iron!  Every year in this business makes me love my job even more.  There really is no better feeling than seeing my clients smile and check themselves out after I do their hair.  Knowing I’ve made a positive impact in how they see themselves means the world to me!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

If I could do hair color all day long, I would be one happy girl! It always keeps me on my toes and makes me think!

We understand you are an educator for the salon - what do you teach and why did you want to start teaching?

I get the privilege of teaching both Wella hair color theory and business coaching.  I was approached and asked to teach both subjects and I couldn’t say no.  There was a need to help out new stylists who wanted a better understanding of the Wella color line and there were also a large number of stylists who needed direction on how to grow to be a successful stylist behind the chair.

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as a hairstylist and how do you overcome it?

The job is pretty glamorous and there really isn’t much to complain about but nothing hurts me more than having an upset client. Sometimes color doesn’t go as planned or we aren’t on the same page but luckily, you can fix any color or style and make it right!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

The list goes on and on!  To me, being genuine and really focusing on what your client needs is so important. Clients need our help and it is such a blessing to have the opportunity to be there for them!

You can find Eileen on Instagram @staleyeileen.  She uses her page to show off her hair and beauty work,  behind the scenes pics and any new services she is offering so I would recommend giving it a follow!

Hayli Winans’ career began at Garbo’s just about three years ago (she’ll celebrate her anniversary in March!).  Her friend told her about the salon and mentioned that she should look into it if she was interested.  After a great interview with our owner, Hayli got to work behind her new chair!

It’s always fun to learn what brought people to Garbo’s and to watch them grow behind the chair.  Hayli is this month’s stylist spotlight because she is working extremely hard to build her business.  Anyone who puts in the extra work to bring in new clients deserves to be recognized!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

I have been a stylist at Garbos for 3 years in March!  I had a friend who worked here and loved it. After meeting with Darcy [the owner of Garbo’s Salon and Spa] I knew Garbo’s is where I wanted to be to grow my career!
Omaha Stylist Hayli Wanins

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

I have wanted  to be a hairstylist since middle school, I’ve just always been amazed by the difference somebody’s hair can make in their life.  Being able to make someone feel so good about themselves to the point where they are ecstatic about how they look is the most awesome feeling!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I love updos and downstyles, loose boho styles are my favorite, I love the energy and excitement that comes with weddings and other special occasions where I get to help someone feel beautiful!  I also love highlights and balayage – pretty, dimensional hair is the best but if you don’t love the harsh grow out of highlighting, balayage can still give tons of dimension without the high maintenance upkeep.  I also love men’s cuts!  They are super detailed and the look of a smooth fade is one of the most satisfying things for me to do! Lashes are right up there too! I really couldn’t pick a favorite!

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as a hairstylist and how do you overcome it?

Being a hairstylist is too commonly thought of as not a “real job”.  That it’s just a fun job that allows you to play with hair all day.  However, in reality, it is more physically and emotionally demanding than many other careers but the bonds you build with your clients who truly appreciate you make it all worth it!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

Dedication to the industry. You really have to want to be a hairstylist to be a successful one. As fun as it is, it takes a lot of work  to build a clientele and it’s easy to get discouraged during slow times of the year. Therefore, if you’re not 100% dedicated you won’t be successful in the industry.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

Winter is hard.  Yep, I said it.  While the snow, crisp weather, and the thought of cuddling up by the fire sounds amazing, it can also make everything downright more challenging.  One of the things winter can really affect is your hair.  We’ve written on the topic of winter hair care before (read here) but we wanted to update it with a few extra tips and tricks.  If you can remember and follow these few things this winter season your hair will be in good shape come spring time!

Protect your hair from the elements

One of the biggest risks to your hair during winter is the weather…  The wind, rain and cold can wreak havoc on your beautiful locks.  The elements might not only ruin your style but they can also cause real damage.  Next time you’re headed out in the cold make sure to protect your locks.  Try a silky headscarf, a hat or just pull your hood up!

Winter Hair Care - Tips and Tricks

Go easy on the heat

I know we say it all the time but excessive amounts of heat can stress and dry out your hair.  If you can muster it, washing your hair will cooler water can really help.  Laying off those styling tools will also provide a break from the heat.  If you can’t skip blow-drying your hair then make sure the heat option is turned down and you use a heat protectant (like Garbo’s Brilliance Blow Dry Spray) to further protect your hair cuticle.

Garbo's Brilliance Blow Dry Accelerator and Flat Iron Sealer – 4.4 oz
  • Blow dry accelerator and flat iron sealer
  • Speeds up blow drying up to 40%
  • Seals cuticles during flat ironing
  • Moroccan Argan protects air from intense heat
  • Weightless formula adds depth and renewed radiance to color-treated hair

Did You Know Garbo's Now Offers Med Spa Services?

In partnership with DGMD Medical, Garbo’s is now offering your favorite med spa services (Botox, fillers and IV bags) at our Midtown Crossing location!

Avoid over washing

Another top tip for winter, and all year round actually, is to avoid over washing your hair.  That means going easy on the shampoo, as too much washing can strip your hair of its natural oils.  Everyone is different, but if you can scale back your washes to no more than three times a week your hair will look and feel much healthier.  When your hair is feeling a little oily, opt for a dry shampoo product like Garbo’s Dry Shampoo to get you through the day.

  • Skip a day of regular shampooing and save time
  • Dry shampoo revives and refreshes
  • Never feels wet or sticky
  • Extends color and blowouts
  • Eliminates odor with fresh scent

Treat your hair

We all need a little TLC in the winter time and our hair certainly does too. One of our favorite winter hair care tips is to treat your hair with a deep conditioner.  The Garbo’s Indulge Masque deep conditioner is one of our faves.  Spend a little extra time in the shower to allow the deep conditioner time to penetrate the hair cuticle.  This should help improve hydration and keep your hair healthy all season long.  If you’re looking for something a little more medicinal, you can try a tea tree oil – its cleansing and nourishing properties will help rebalance the scalp, clean out your hair follicles and nourish your roots.

Garbo's Indulge Masque – 6 oz
  • Ultimate moisturizing treatment
  • Intense moisturizing for touchable softness
  • Won’t weigh hair down
  • Replenishes moisture loss during color & chemical treatments
  • Perfect for dry/damaged hair

Keep It Trim

The thought of cutting your hair to help it grow faster is still hard to grasp… No matter how many times our stylists tell us.  However, trimming your hair helps get rid of split ends before they have the chance to split further up the strand and ultimately weaken the entire thing.  This might be asking a lot, but if you have long hair you should look to get a trim every three months.  If you have short or medium length hair you should come in for a trim every two months.  In doing so you are helping to remove the dead ends which will help your hair stay healthy much longer!

Not all of these winter hair care tips are easy, but if you’re looking to improve the look, feel and length of your hair over the winter months than you need to keep it healthy.  Put these tips into practice to help your hair stay healthy and beautiful all winter long!

Sending love,

Maddie

Girls Night In Hair and Makeup Looks

(Left) Mackenzie Freed styled Kelsey Bloom’s hair using Aveda Air Control and Garbo’s Texturizing Spray.  Mackenzie curled different sized sections of Kelsey’s hair to achieve her lived in look.  Sara O’Neill applied her makeup and kept her look a little more natural using Aveda’s Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture in Beechwood.  Kelsey is wearing the Cheetah Print Pajama Set from Ann Taylor.

(Right) Audrey Reinhardt styled Christina’s hair using Garbo’s Stay Spray and Garbo’s Finishing Spray.  Ashley Beutler used Aveda’s Feed my lips™ pure nourish-mint™ lipstick in Sutra, and Aveda’s petal essence™ face accents in Plum Touch and Bronze Glow to create a natural and care-free makeup look.  Christina is wearing the Cheetah Print Robe from Ann Taylor.

We’ve partnered with other businesses, got all glammed up and posed for the camera before; however, this time was different.  Instead of inviting other models to join us, this time we decided to keep it all in-house.  We have so many amazingly beautiful women (both inside and out) at our locations so it was a no brainer to include them in last month’s photoshoot!

With the goal of showing off a few holiday styles for both a Girls Night In and a Girls Night Out we started planning out the hairstyles and the makeup looks we wanted to do.  When it came to the clothes, we decided to partner with Ann Taylor – Regency Court and we are so happy we did!

The holidays may be behind us but there is always something to celebrate.  No matter what you have coming up – birthday parties, office parties, night out with your gals – we hope you love this peek inside the looks we put together for you!

Kelsey Bloom styled Dani Jo’s hair in an undone updo.  This simple look would be perfect for any girls night in!  The hair was prepped with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep and finished with Aveda Air Control.  Dani Jo is applying Aveda Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Rich Creme.

These Garbo’s girls unwrap their new Image Skincare presents!  Image Skincare is Garbo’s brand new line of professional skincare products.

(Second from Right) Ashley Beutler’s hair was styled by Mikaela Kellogg using the Garbo’s Extra Hold Hairspray.  Ashley’s makeup was done by Shannon Norwood using Aveda Feed My Lips Pure Nourish-Mint Lipstick in Sutra, and Aveda’s Brow Definer in Dark Brown.  Ashely is wearing the Animal Print PJ Set from Ann Taylor.

Aveda Botanical Kinetics Intense Hydrating Rich Creme

Perfect for an at-home spa night, this hydrating creme instantly moisturizes the skin helping to recharge your skin cells.  This creme can be purchased at any Garbo’s Salon and Spa location and is ideal for dry to very dry skin.

New to Garbo’s Salon and Spa, Image Skincare is a professional, clinical brand designed with skincare professionals at top of mind. Image Skincare’s products are physician-formulated and uses active ingredients and cutting edge science to create treatments that works for your specific condition and situation.
