Stylist Spotlight – Village Pointe Hair Stylist, Sam Dolan

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Sam Dolan, one of our amazing stylists at Garbo’s Village Pointe! She’s an Omaha native, dog momma of four, and loves her job. Sam has been in the beauty industry for over a decade and has a lot to share…continue reading to hear her story!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo's Salon and what made you want to work here?

This is my fifth year working for Garbos, and I have been in the beauty industry for 12 years! I wanted to work for Garbo’s because I knew I needed a supportive work family, and education, which is by far the best I have ever had. Before joining Garbo’s, I worked for a salon that didn’t do color and I knew that it wasn’t my forever home!

Why did you choose to be a stylist and why do you love it?

I knew I was meant to do hair. I will say, I cut a lot of my doll’s hair and the famous “My Little Ponies”. I went to UNO for Biology and I knew it wasn’t for me!

What would you consider to be your specialties when it comes to your job?

I am certified in Habit hand-tied extensions based out of Gilbert, Arizona as of March 2019. I am currently working on my Aqua hand-tied extension certification as well.  My other specialties include balayage, highlights, color, on-site wedding hair, and special occasion hair

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

My all time favorite service would be extensions! I also really like coloring services, even if it’s just a gloss or toner!

Due to COVID-19, Garbo's had to close its doors for a while - how did that impact you and what was it like coming back?

I hate to say it, and jokingly, I was waiting for an adult summer break all my life! I enjoyed my time at home to recalibrate and came back recharged. I spent most of my time educating myself, thinking of DIY projects that I never started or finished before. Coming back, I was so nervous, it was like my first day at Garbo’s all over again. I don’t know why…. it was a complete reboot, almost like meeting my coworkers again for the first time. It took me about 20 min of every day to get used to the mask, but now I drive all the way home with it on as if it’s a part of me. Won’t it be weird the first day we don’t have to wear masks anymore?!

With all the new safety measures in place, has it been more difficult to do your job?

I don’t think my job has been more difficult, I just have a couple more steps to do now! There’s definitely more cleaning and the physical aspect of working with a mask but I think the most difficult thing is the emotions that come with dealing with COVID.  A lot more people are stressed, anxious, and scared so it can be difficult working with all these new emotions.  Therefore, I try to give myself more time for self-care so I can be recharged for my clients!

Aside from those new safety measures, what is the biggest challenge you encounter as a stylist and how do you overcome it?

Saying no! As a stylist, I want to give my clients exactly what they want, when they want it. It’s hard to tell and explain why the final look can’t happen all in one day.  Such as going from black box color to platinum, in 3 hours.

I have to remind myself that I am the professional with years of experience and need to have confidence to tell a client what we can do today and what we can’t.  Under promise, over deliver.

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful stylist?

I’ll say this first, my instructors told me about the 80/20 rule. 80% of our class won’t be doing hair in 5 years and 20% will.  I’d have to say that within my cosmetology class of 26 maybe 3 girls are still in the industry.  It takes being in love with the industry and treating every client as if they were on vacation at the spa.  You have to make a memorable experience for them, go above and beyond. I washed a young girl’s hair for her first time and she never forgot it – she’s become a lifetime client just from that experience!

It’s about being a business person, tracking your service and retail numbers. I can look back at last year’s numbers and compare this year’s. I set goals for each day, week, month, and year. It’s about advertising and promoting your work!  Becoming successful means failing, and I’ve failed a lot, but it’s about turning the failures into learning experiences. Education has a huge impact on your success. This industry is ever-changing and to keep up with new trends you need to immerse yourself in education – wherever you can find it.  I learn a lot on Instagram and social media which is crazy!  Also, it’s always important to ask for help, it doesn’t matter how long you have been doing hair, someone else will have a fresh idea or perspective on how to solve the equation, whether it be a color formula or color correction.

We are so happy to showcase another one of our awesome stylists this month! We love Sam and her love for doing hair. If you’re interested in booking an appointment with Sam, you can schedule an appointment by calling 402-991-2227 or by booking with her online Finally, make sure you’re following her on Instagram @sam.dolan.at.garbos.

Stylist Spotlight – Midtown Crossing Stylist Sam Garibo

Omaha Stylist Sam Garibo

This month, we’re highlighting one of our awesome stylists, Sam Garibo! Sam has been with us at our Midtown Crossing location for over two years now. We love all of the creativity that she brings to the salon. Continue reading to hear more about Sam and her story!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo's Salon and what made you want to work here?

I have been working at Garbo’s for 2.5 years now! Garbo’s was the second
salon I ever job shadowed at, and I loved the vibe from Day 1. It was
professional, luxurious and laid back, everything I wanted for my business! All
the stylists were super cool and welcoming, I just knew that I wanted to work in that environment. The owner seemed genuinely interested in me as a
professional too. I felt valued and I knew I could learn a lot at Garbos!

Why did you choose to be a stylist and why do you love it? What would you consider your specialties when it comes to your job?

I was actually in my sophomore year at UNO, when I decided to become a hairstylist. None of the majors seemed interesting enough for me and I always ended up feeling like I was settling. So, I asked myself, “In a perfect world where no one could tell you anything, what would your career look like?” Cosmetology was the answer and I dropped out of UNO the very next week! I wanted a career where I could be creative, be in charge of how much $$$ I could potentially make, and I wanted to be able to dress up and be ‘boujee’.

Although I enjoy doing all types of hair, my specialty is “Lived in Hair.” Hair that is low maintenance and looks effortlessly ‘slept in’. I love soft color blends and lots of texture. I recently got certified in Hand Tied Extensions, and I am practicing lots so I can make them one of my specialties, as well!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I actually don’t think I have a “favorite service.” I honestly enjoy whatever my client needs the most. For example, a client may come in for color, but realize that the haircut was the most impactful part of their visit. I just love when my clients feel good when they see their hair. Whether it’s a color, cut, or a new set of extensions, I love doing whatever is going to make my client’s life better.

Due to COVID-19 Garbo's had to close its doors for a while - how did that impact you and what was it like coming back?

Closing for Covid was scary. I was very sad and stressed out by the situation, but I decided that this was a rare gift of time. I was given a lot of free time and I really wanted to do something productive. That’s what was going to make me feel better about it. So, I took a lot of classes and practiced a lot while we closed. Coming back was also scary! I had a lot of mixed emotions, but my main priority was safety and seeing all my clients again. I got used to the masks fast and I’m just grateful that I can keep providing services!

With all the new safety measures in place, has it been more difficult to do your job?

I don’t think my job has been more difficult, I just have a couple more steps to do now! There’s definitely more cleaning and the physical aspect of working with a mask, but I think the most difficult thing is the emotions that come with dealing with Covid. A lot more people are stressed, anxious and scared so it can be difficult working with all these new emotions. So, I try to give myself more time for self-care, so I can be recharged for my clients!

Aside from those new safety measures, what is the biggest challenge you encounter as a stylist and how do you overcome it?

Covid aside, one of the biggest challenges that come with being a stylist is the sense of ‘having to catch up.’ I always felt like I wasn’t good enough or that I needed to work on something. It was so stressful comparing my business to someone else’s. I had to learn that my path is unique and that wanting to be better shouldn’t be a hindrance, but motivation!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful stylist?

A successful stylist can be all about numbers, having a booked schedule, having high retail, but to me it’s about the clients. A successful stylist is a stylist that makes their clients day easier. I never want to push something to a client because I want to have a higher ticket. For me, it’s all about building an honest relationship with whoever sits in my chair. There has never been a greater shift in my business until I figured this out! Don’t get me wrong, a successful stylist needs to be dedicated and consistent, but I stopped trying to focus on the numbers and focused on truly solving my client’s hair problems and the clients started pouring in!

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you or your work?

I want the readers who are considering a career that is creative, “low income” and/or non-traditional to feel motivated to pursue becoming a hairstylist! I believe that if you have passion for something and you are determined to make it work, that it will! I was always an academic and I got really good grades and I would’ve never imagined I would be working at a salon, but I am making my career fruitful and I am so happy! Being smart in a creative job is not a ‘waste’ as some people may tell you!

We are so happy to highlight another one of our amazing stylists this month. We love Sam and all her dedication and feel blessed that she’s on our team. If you’re interested in booking an appointment with her, you can find her at our Midtown Crossing location.  You can schedule an appointment with her by calling 402-933-9737 or by booking her online Finally, make sure you’re following her on Instagram @samanthagaribo.

Stylist Spotlight – Omaha Stylist Alysha Donahoo

Omaha Stylist Alysha Donahoo

We’re so excited to spotlight yet another one of our amazing stylists this month! Alysha Donahoo has been with us at our Oakview location for quite some time. We love her positive energy and the contagious smile she’s always wearing when arriving at the salon. Continue reading to hear about Alysha and her story!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo's Salon and what made you want to work here?

Eight years—when I first moved to Omaha it was one of the best-known salons.

Why did you choose to be a stylist and why do you love it? What would you consider your specialties when it comes to your job?

My best friend was going to hair school and dragged me along…from there it became a part of me, and I saw myself doing nothing else. I LOVE a good blonde and doing fades.

ADue to COVID-19 Garbo's had to close its doors for a while - how did that impact you and what was it like coming back?

With COVID, I honestly got to sit back and enjoy my three beautiful daughters. Life can get so busy. It was amazing being able to slow down and cuddle. But, coming back made me realize how much I need my clients as well.

With all the new safety measures in place, has it been more difficult to do your job?

The only difficulty with the safety measure would have to be the mask. We already sanitized after each client before the virus, I just miss seeing their faces!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful stylist?

Being consistent and loving what you do! I ALWAYS show up with a smile on my face!

We love being able to show off our stylists’ and all of the hard work that they do. Thank you for reading about Alysha and her story!

Spotlight – Omaha Stylist Shannon Carsey

Maddie Poteat Headshot

By: Maddie Poteat

After high school, Shannon wasn’t sure what she wanted to do.  She took a year off to think through her options and ended up finding her passion for hair.  With a stroke of luck, her best friend from hair school was working at Garbo’s and told her she should come check it out.  Lucky for us, Shannon loved it and has been here ever since!

It’s been a while since our last stylist spotlight and we couldn’t have chosen a better person to highlight as our first post back!  Read on below to learn more about Shannon Carsey!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

I have been a stylist at Garbos for 7 years. My best friend from hair school was a stylist at Garbo’s and wanted me to come join her.  At the time I wasn’t sure if I would fit in but I’m so glad I did because I work with a great group of people.!

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

Honestly I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school so I took a year off to decide. I had people that told me I’d make a great hair stylist because I enjoyed messing with hair and have always been a people person. So that’s what made me pursue a career as a stylist.

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I really enjoy cutting short pixie haircuts but ultimately I love every aspect of my job because it gives me the opportunity to make people feel good about themselves.

Due to COVID-19 Garbo's had to close its doors for a while - how did that impact you and what was it like coming back?

Covid really made me miss my work and it also made me realize how much I value my clients. I was ecstatic to come back and start doing hair again!

With all the new safety measures in place, has it been more difficult to do your job?

The new safety measures in place haven’t made it more difficult but it has been an adjustment in getting used to this new normal within our country. I know the changes we’ve made are good in helping keep everyone safe. {Garbo’s Salon and Spa Safety Guidelines}

Aside from those new safety measures, what is the biggest challenge you encounter as a stylist and how do you over come it?

The biggest challenge has been getting used to wearing a mask all day. Although its frustrating at times, I know it’s the right thing to do in keeping our clients safe.

Shannon Carsey Omaha Hairstylist

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

Listening to people and being able to hold a conversation… being kind, attentive, and consistent in the service you provide.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you or your work?

I truly love what I do and care about the people who walk through our doors.  Our clients matter and I want them walking out feeling the best possible way about themselves.

Box Dye vs. Professional Hair Color

Lindsey Carraher - Stylist at Garbo's Salon and Spa - Blog Post Photo

By: Lindsey Carraher

The old “box dye” versus professional hair color convo… let’s have it!

I’m sure all of us, at some point in our day, have been tempted by Eva Longoria’s stunningly gorgeous headshot on a “chestnut sand” box of hair color in the Walgreen’s aisle…  And most of us, including me, have given it a shot!  We are human, the manufacture’s marketing skills are on point and hey- it’s only $8!  Well, let me fill you in on what I’ve learned since my own days of “home highlights”…

Just like EVERYTHING out there on the market, you get what you pay for.  Brand new hair color for less than $20 may seem like the ultimate “deal” but when you think about it this particular thing you are paying for is one that chemically alters every strand of hair on your head.  Yes, chemically alters!  No matter which brand you choose or which store you purchase it from the product works the same way… How is it possible that the box is able to give you and your girlfriend (with the complete opposite hair color) the same result?!

It’s possible by pumping the products full of high-level peroxides and ammonia to make certain the hair does “something”.  “Why did it turn out nothing like the picture?” – because it lacks information on certain factors that a highly trained hairstylist will take into consideration when coloring your hair.  These factors include the color, condition, underlying pigment, porosity, history, density, texture or the current integrity of your hair.  Your stylist will also know that fine hair processes differently than coarse hair.  That dark hair has a different underlying pigment than light hair does.  That hair processes differently on the base than on the mid-strands and ends… Your stylist is able to factor in these points in order to create the perfect formula for your specific hair.

“Why doesn’t my hair shine like Eva’s”, you ask?  The chemicals used in the way box color uses them, break open and roughen the cuticle.  Think of the cuticle layer like shingles on a roof.  These “box colors” cause all the “shingles” to stay raised and rough not allowing light to bounce off of them and reflect.  Raised shingles don’t do the roof much good in the way of protection…  Just like a raised shingle would allow rain, critters and other outdoor things to creep into the ceiling of your home, the raised cuticle of your hair also allows heat and other environmental factors to get in between them which end up damaging and breaking the hair.

I know many of you are thinking “salons are just so much more expensive!”  So I challenge you to think of it this way… if you had to wear the same top every single day to every event, every function and around every social group forever would you buy an $8 top from Walgreen’s?  Probably not!  You would probably spend the time searching for and trying on many tops before deciding to make a worthy investment on the perfect one, right!?  Your hair is just that.  It is the mainstay of your wardrobe.  It is the accessory you never take off…

So, now that I’ve shared my thoughts on this matter, my advice to you is this: save yourself the stress, the risk and the money it will cost for your color correction and find a hairstylist you trust.  You will not regret it!

Sending love,

Lindsey

Spotlight – Omaha Esthetician Katherine Bower

Maddie Poteat Headshot

By: Maddie Poteat

We all may be stuck inside and the doors to our salons locked up tight but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the hard work of someone who truly deserves it.  This month’s spotlight shines the light on one of our fabulous estheticians.  We’ve spent the last few weeks sharing all the amazing services our spa offers so it only makes sense to share more about the person who is in charge of them!

Katherine Bower joined Garbo’s seven years ago and calls our Village Pointe location “home”.  In addition to her work as an esthetician she is also our Spa Lead and Village Pointe‘s wedding coordinator!   She may be busy but she handles all of her responsibilities with ease.  It’s no wonder she is this month’s spotlight!

How long have you been an esthetician at Garbo’s Salon and what made you want to work there?

I’ve been working for Garbo’s going on 7 years. I had a friend who worked for the company recommend I apply and I’m so glad I did! I knew right away after my interview with Darcy that it was the best place to grow my career!

Facial in Omaha by Katherine Bower

Why did you choose to be an esthetician and why do you love it?

I chose to be an esthetician because I have always struggled with acne and skin problems. Going to aesthetic school gave me the opportunity to educate myself on how to take care of my own skin and my client’s skin!  I absolutely love what I do. I have the opportunity to make my clients feel good about themselves! And to me that is extremely rewarding.

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

My favorite service I provide to my clients is facials.  I get to help someone understand their skin and how to take care of it and they also leave feeling relaxed and pampered!  But I really do love all the services I provide my clients – from transforming brows to taking care of someone on their wedding day!

Omaha Spa Lead Katherine Bower

We understand you are the spa lead for the salon - what additional responsibilities do you have?

As the spa leader of Garbo’s, my responsibilities are making sure that the spa is the best it can be! I make  sure all the spa team members are educated and up to date on what’s new. I’m also the wedding coordinator for the Village Pointe location. I love being able to help brides plan their special day!

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as an esthetician and how do you overcome it?

I strive for perfection and sometimes it’s not going to happen over night. I do my best everyday to make sure my clients leave happy!

Omaha Facial by Katherine Bower

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful esthetician?

Being successful in this industry means you have to work hard and never stop educating yourself! Some days are easier than others but it all pays off in the end and I couldn’t be happier with where my career is now and where it is heading in the future!

As you know, this month is spa month - is there anything else you would like our readers to know about our spa or spa services we provide?

We offer so much in the spa at all the Garbo’s locations! Customized Image or Aveda facials, amazing massages to waxing and nails! We also have spa packages for the perfect day to relax and be pampered!

Thank you to Katherine for allowing us to interview her (over the phone) this month!  If you’re interesting in learning more about the salon services we offer, you can find them here.  If you’re interested in booking an appointment with Katherine Bower when we re-open our doors you can do that here!

The Benefits of a Professional Facial

Maddie Poteat Headshot

By: Maddie Poteat

For me, getting a facial is a treat.   It is something I’ll have done when I’m on vacation or something I’ll reward myself with after hitting one of my monthly/quarterly goals.  Maybe it’s the cost of a facial or maybe it’s the need to “earn” my relaxation time that forces me to think about facials this way…  Whatever my excuses are, they need to be forgotten!

After talking with Katherine Bower, one of our talented estheticians who works at our Village Pointe location, I learned the benefits of professional facials and why we should all get them regularly.  Katherine also gave me a behind the scenes look at what goes into a professional facial at Garbo’s Salon and Spa as well as a few tricks for acing your first appointment.

Garbo's Professional Facial Products

Benefits of Professional Facials

The benefits of regular facials have a lot to do with the skin on our faces.  Our facial skin is much thinner and more sensitive than the skin on the rest of our bodies.  Therefore, it deserves more attention and requires a different routine and different products.  Everyone’s skin is different, therefore, everyone’s facials should be as well.  However, no matter what type of facial you receive the benefits remain the same.

Exfoliates the Skin –

Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells from the surface of your face.  Yes, you can exfoliate your skin at home.  However, your at-home products don’t compare with what professional estheticians have access too.  The use of these high-quality products helps to better remove that first layer of skin which reveals a healthy, glowing layer of skin beneath it.

Improves Circulation –

Professional facials help increase circulation in your skin by promoting new skin cell growth which leads to healthier and younger looking skin!  Facial massages and dry brushing are both techniques the esthetician might use during your appointment to achieve this.

Reduces Stress and Tension –

The massage portion of your facial wasn’t added by accident.  By massaging the face the esthetician increases blood flow and helps drain any excess fluid from your facial area.  The spa where you receive your professional facials will most likely use some sort of aromatherapy, either in the room or on the towels while giving a facial.  These aromas help to calm and relax you during the service.

Removes Toxins –

Our face, along with the rest of our skin, encounters so many things throughout the day – be it pollution, germs or free radicals.  Those things can get into our pores and cause our skin to breakout.  One of the main benefits of a facial is removing the toxins so your skin can breathe and shine.  A professional esthetician will use ingredients that open up and clean your pores thus minimizing acne and other problems toxins can cause.

Helps Your Skin Age Gracefully –

My favorite part of a facial is the anti-aging benefits.  While our skin is going to age no matter what we do, we can help it age more gracefully by being diligent in our morning and evening skincare routines and letting the professionals treat it regularly.  During a professional facial, the esthetician will use products enriched with botanical extracts that can stimulate the production of collagen and help to reduce those pesky fine lines and wrinkles.  In addition, these products help keep the skin hydrated and balanced which also aids in reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

While the benefits of a facial are undisputed, the answer to how often you should get them is variable.  It is important to talk with your esthetician about your skin goals so they can better recommend both products and a course of treatment.  For those of you who are like me and have trouble scheduling facials for yourself make sure to snag our latest coupon to save $25 off a Classic or Signature facial!

If you are wondering what all goes into a Classic or Signature facial make sure to tune in next week when we share our behind the scenes look at what makes a Garbo’s Salon and Spa professional facial so amazing.  We’ll also be including Katherine’s tips for making your next spa experience one for the books!

If a professional facial is not enough to reduce the stress you’re feeling during these uncertain times, we recommend BetterHelp.  BetterHelp provides stress management techniques that can help you feel better in no time!

Spotlight – Omaha Stylist Eileen Staley

Maddie Poteat Headshot

By: Maddie Poteat

Eileen Staley grew up in a small town and thought she would end up in an equally small salon when she grew up.  However, life had other plans!  For the past five years Eileen has called our Regency location home!

As we close out the month of February we wanted to shine our stylist spotlight on someone who goes above and beyond.  Not only is Eileen a top performing stylist (named a 2019 Top Performer) she is also one of our talented business coaches.  The enthusiasm she has for her work is contagious and we are so excited to shine this month’s stylist spotlight on her!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

Being from a small town, I always thought I’d end up in a small, family run salon but the minute I met Darcy Michalek (Owner of Garbo’s Salon and Spa), I knew Garbo’s was for me. Family is such a big deal at Garbo’s and I’m forever grateful for that. I’ve been lucky to be with Garbo’s for five years and I have no plans of ever leaving!

Eileen Staley - Omaha Stylist Spotlight

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

When I think back to my childhood I was always doing my doll’s, sister’s, and even friend’s hair before 4th grade basketball games!  I knew from the time I was a child that I loved hair and that I would make that my job when I grew up.

I’ve come a long way since playing with my doll’s hair – I used to think hair had to be wet to get a curl with a curling iron!  Every year in this business makes me love my job even more.  There really is no better feeling than seeing my clients smile and check themselves out after I do their hair.  Knowing I’ve made a positive impact in how they see themselves means the world to me!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

If I could do hair color all day long, I would be one happy girl! It always keeps me on my toes and makes me think!

We understand you are an educator for the salon - what do you teach and why did you want to start teaching?

I get the privilege of teaching both Wella hair color theory and business coaching.  I was approached and asked to teach both subjects and I couldn’t say no.  There was a need to help out new stylists who wanted a better understanding of the Wella color line and there were also a large number of stylists who needed direction on how to grow to be a successful stylist behind the chair.

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as a hairstylist and how do you overcome it?

The job is pretty glamorous and there really isn’t much to complain about but nothing hurts me more than having an upset client. Sometimes color doesn’t go as planned or we aren’t on the same page but luckily, you can fix any color or style and make it right!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

The list goes on and on!  To me, being genuine and really focusing on what your client needs is so important. Clients need our help and it is such a blessing to have the opportunity to be there for them!

You can find Eileen on Instagram @staleyeileen.  She uses her page to show off her hair and beauty work,  behind the scenes pics and any new services she is offering so I would recommend giving it a follow!

Spotlight – Omaha Stylist Hayli Winans

Maddie Poteat Headshot

By: Maddie Poteat

Hayli Winans’ career began at Garbo’s just about three years ago (she’ll celebrate her anniversary in March!).  Her friend told her about the salon and mentioned that she should look into it if she was interested.  After a great interview with our owner, Hayli got to work behind her new chair!

It’s always fun to learn what brought people to Garbo’s and to watch them grow behind the chair.  Hayli is this month’s stylist spotlight because she is working extremely hard to build her business.  Anyone who puts in the extra work to bring in new clients deserves to be recognized!

How long have you been a stylist at Garbo’s Salon and Spa and what made you want to work there?

I have been a stylist at Garbos for 3 years in March!  I had a friend who worked here and loved it. After meeting with Darcy [the owner of Garbo’s Salon and Spa] I knew Garbo’s is where I wanted to be to grow my career!

Omaha Stylist Hayli Wanins

Why did you choose to be a hairstylist and why do you love it?

I have wanted  to be a hairstylist since middle school, I’ve just always been amazed by the difference somebody’s hair can make in their life.  Being able to make someone feel so good about themselves to the point where they are ecstatic about how they look is the most awesome feeling!

What is your favorite service to provide to your clients?

I love updos and downstyles, loose boho styles are my favorite, I love the energy and excitement that comes with weddings and other special occasions where I get to help someone feel beautiful!  I also love highlights and balayage – pretty, dimensional hair is the best but if you don’t love the harsh grow out of highlighting, balayage can still give tons of dimension without the high maintenance upkeep.  I also love men’s cuts!  They are super detailed and the look of a smooth fade is one of the most satisfying things for me to do! Lashes are right up there too! I really couldn’t pick a favorite!

What is the biggest challenge you encounter as a hairstylist and how do you overcome it?

Being a hairstylist is too commonly thought of as not a “real job”.  That it’s just a fun job that allows you to play with hair all day.  However, in reality, it is more physically and emotionally demanding than many other careers but the bonds you build with your clients who truly appreciate you make it all worth it!

In your opinion, what does it take to become a successful hairstylist?

Dedication to the industry. You really have to want to be a hairstylist to be a successful one. As fun as it is, it takes a lot of work  to build a clientele and it’s easy to get discouraged during slow times of the year. Therefore, if you’re not 100% dedicated you won’t be successful in the industry.

Winter Hair Care Tips

Maddie Poteat Headshot

By: Maddie Poteat

Winter is hard.  Yep, I said it.  While the snow, crisp weather, and the thought of cuddling up by the fire sounds amazing, it can also make everything downright more challenging.  One of the things winter can really affect is your hair.  We’ve written on the topic of winter hair care before (read here) but we wanted to update it with a few extra tips and tricks.  If you can remember and follow these few things this winter season your hair will be in good shape come spring time!

Protect your hair from the elements

One of the biggest risks to your hair during winter is the weather…  The wind, rain and cold can wreak havoc on your beautiful locks.  The elements might not only ruin your style but they can also cause real damage.  Next time you’re headed out in the cold make sure to protect your locks.  Try a silky headscarf, a hat or just pull your hood up!

Winter Hair Care - Tips and Tricks

Go easy on the heat

I know we say it all the time but excessive amounts of heat can stress and dry out your hair.  If you can muster it, washing your hair will cooler water can really help.  Laying off those styling tools will also provide a break from the heat.  If you can’t skip blow-drying your hair then make sure the heat option is turned down and you use a heat protectant (like Garbo’s Brilliance Blow Dry Spray) to further protect your hair cuticle.

Avoid over washing

Another top tip for winter, and all year round actually, is to avoid over washing your hair.  That means going easy on the shampoo, as too much washing can strip your hair of its natural oils.  Everyone is different, but if you can scale back your washes to no more than three times a week your hair will look and feel much healthier.  When your hair is feeling a little oily, opt for a dry shampoo product like Garbo’s Dry Shampoo to get you through the day.

  • Skip a day of regular shampooing and save time
  • Dry shampoo revives and refreshes
  • Never feels wet or sticky
  • Extends color and blowouts
  • Eliminates odor with fresh scent

Treat your hair

We all need a little TLC in the winter time and our hair certainly does too. One of our favorite winter hair care tips is to treat your hair with a deep conditioner.  The Garbo’s Indulge Masque deep conditioner is one of our faves.  Spend a little extra time in the shower to allow the deep conditioner time to penetrate the hair cuticle.  This should help improve hydration and keep your hair healthy all season long.  If you’re looking for something a little more medicinal, you can try a tea tree oil – its cleansing and nourishing properties will help rebalance the scalp, clean out your hair follicles and nourish your roots.

Garbo's Indulge Masque – 6 oz

  • Ultimate moisturizing treatment
  • Intense moisturizing for touchable softness
  • Won’t weigh hair down
  • Replenishes moisture loss during color & chemical treatments
  • Perfect for dry/damaged hair

Keep It Trim

The thought of cutting your hair to help it grow faster is still hard to grasp… No matter how many times our stylists tell us.  However, trimming your hair helps get rid of split ends before they have the chance to split further up the strand and ultimately weaken the entire thing.  This might be asking a lot, but if you have long hair you should look to get a trim every three months.  If you have short or medium length hair you should come in for a trim every two months.  In doing so you are helping to remove the dead ends which will help your hair stay healthy much longer!

Not all of these winter hair care tips are easy, but if you’re looking to improve the look, feel and length of your hair over the winter months than you need to keep it healthy.  Put these tips into practice to help your hair stay healthy and beautiful all winter long!

Sending love,

Maddie
